2023 Costco Advent Calendar Day 23 – Aldersbacher Urhell (what I should have gotten)

Today’s beer, or at least the beer I was supposed to get on the 23rd day of the 2023 Advent Calendar, is Aldersbacher Urhell, a 5.1% ABV German Helles lager from Brauerei Aldersbacher in Aldersbach, Germany.  This beer is making its debut in the 2023 calendar.  Aldersbach is about 100 miles northeast of Munich and is a small town with a population of 4,383 people.  Instead of the Urhell, I got a re-run of the Schlossbrauerei Herrngiersdorf Grantler Hell (also known as Grumpy Hell in some states).

The Aldersbacher website says the brewery celebrated its 750th anniversary in 2018.

This tracks with the daily Beer Tasting video, which can be found here, noted that the brewery is one of the world’s oldest breweries, dating back to it founding as a monastery brewery in 1268.

The Aldersbacher Urhell is described on the website as using Hallertauer, Perle and Tradition hops.

The website says the beer is 5.1% ABV and has 18 IBU.

Aldersbacher makes a pretty wide range of traditional beers including the 1248 Urhell, Kloster Hell, a Festbier, Ursprung (an Export Hell), Kloster Dunkel and a seasonal Maibock.  They also produce the usual assortment of expected traditional wheat beers.  They also have a craft beer selection that includes a Barley Wine, Altbier, Stout, Pale Ale, and India Pale Ale.

Nearby breweries include Wolferstetter Bräu Georg Huber KG, located approximately seven miles to the east in Vilshofen an der Donau, Schloßbrauerei Arnstorf located approximately 16 miles west in Arnstorf, and Graf Arco Brewery located approximately 16 miles west in Eichendorf.

There does not appear to be any festivals held in Aldersbach.

Anyway, back to the beer!

Oh…wait.  I can’t go back to the beer BECAUSE I DID NOT GET IT

Anyway…

Brauerei Aldersbacher is located at:

Freiherr-von-Aretin-Platz 1
Aldersbach, 94501
Germany

The Beer Tasting website describes the beer as follows:

Clear, medium yellow beer with a good, long-lasting foam head. Malt aroma, grainy, spicy. The taste is slightly bitter, sweet, long-lasting.

Information about the brewery on the Beer Tasting website can be found here.
